Alternators are electric generators that produce electricity to power your Chevy’s battery and electronics. The three main parts of the alternator include the stator or a set of fixed wire windings, the rotor which spins and has an iron core, and the alternator pulley which is rotated by the engine belt.
How Long Do Chevy Alternators Last?
For the most part, alternators last between 7 to 10 years or 100,000 to 150,000 miles. In some cases, however, it can become defective as early as the 60,000-mile mark. Because alternators are located so close to the engine, they’re prone to extreme heat. Excessive vibrations and electrical spikes can also cause alternators to fail prematurely.

With the right tools and information about your vehicle’s alternator setup, you can easily replace the alternator yourself. With that said, some models are more difficult to work on than others.
