Control arms, also called A-arms, are critical parts of your vehicle’s suspension system. They connect the wheel hub and steering knuckle to the vehicle’s body. A-arms enable your Chevy’s wheels to move up and down while keeping them aligned, making your vehicle stable.

Identifying a Bad Control Arm in Your Chevy

If your Chevy has a failing upper or lower control arm, then the handling and overall safety of your vehicle can be impacted. Here are common signs of a bad control arm:

  • Unusual clunking, creaking, or popping sounds when you go over bumps or when braking
  • Excessive steering wheel vibrations especially at high speeds
  • Uneven or accelerated tire wear
  • Imprecise steering, excessive body roll when cornering, or general driving instability
  • Can You Drive With a Broken Control Arm?

While not all control arm problems are the same, some failures can cause terrible road incidents. A complete ball joint failure for example, can cause a steering knuckle disconnection, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle. Failing to replace a damaged control arm can also lead to more expensive repairs to your vehicle’s suspension system.
