Knowing the Parts of Your Car’s Fuel System

Modern fuel systems are composed of the fuel tank, pump, lines, the filter, pressure regulator, and fuel injectors. Fuel injectors are ubiquitous in modern vehicles, and it’s easy to assume that they were right after GM had introduced them in the late 1950s. But while the 1960s Corvette would be known as the first successful fuel-injected vehicle, it would take about two decades for electronic fuel injection (EFI) to become mainstream. With the advancement of EFI technology, carburetors became less common, and direct fuel injection became the norm in fuel systems.

What Are the Signs of a Failing Fuel Injector?

Fuel injectors are sensitive parts that deliver precise amounts of fuel inside the engine’s cylinders. For efficient performance, they need regular maintenance, and in some cases, replacement. A failing fuel injector manifests as a confluence of engine misfires, rough idling, and the occasional engine surge. You’ll also notice a gradual decline in fuel economy.

Does Changing the Fuel Filter Make a Difference?

Aside from a faulty fuel injector, you might also have a clogged fuel filter. The fuel filter is often located either inside the fuel tank or in the opening of the fuel line. Replacing a dirty fuel filter might be able to solve the fuel system issues you’re experiencing with your vehicle.
